The Empty Circle is proud to showcase the work of Claudia Doring Baez at Volta New York. Please visit us at Booth 103 to see a selection of paintings from her recent series, Camera Lucida.

Inspired by Roland Barthes’ essays on photography, these paintings explore Barthes structuralist theories. Baez locates photographs Barthes cites in his writing and interprets the images using his text to focus her attention on certain aspects of each painting. This process frees Baez to work expressively and helps her come in contact with subjects and stories that enrich her practice. In a time when the truth of something is more elusive than ever, she creates an optimistic dialog with the public around Barthes’ theories as they apply to art and the art market.
